From our National Commander and Chair
Richard D. Kingsberry
Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army, Retired
National Commander/ National Command Council Board Chair

NABVETS, Inc. continues to assist veterans and their families even during the current pandemic.  We must remain focused on the importance of what we do and the potential positive impact our efforts can have on veterans, their families and their communities.
The challenging year of 2020, NABVETS, Inc. saw gains in membership, closer and more frequent dialogue with Congressional Representatives and their staff, development of collaborative plans with the Department of Veteran Affairs, an increase in donors, and the release of the first ever commemorative Membership Directory.
Also, during 2020 NABVETS, Inc. remained resilient and our unwavering commitment to serve veterans is still critical to our mission. The year did have its challenges.  Our Service Officers continued and continues to serve veterans in a variety of ways to include teleconferences and virtual. To these dedicated Service Officers, I applaud all the sacrifices you make to assist your fellow veterans.  Thank you for not just thinking about yourself and what personal gains you can get through and from the organization. I applaud your commitment.
As the explicit complicity has made its way center stage in this country threatening and attacking our democracy, members of organizations like NABVETS, Inc. must stand strong and not yield to temptation to practice that negative complicity among those in our organization. Unity is a measure of how well an organization, and its members, advance its cause. Collectively, our NABVETS, Inc. team can and will continue to improve in meeting the needs of the veteran community we serve.
With Honor, Duty, and Respect,
Richard D. Kingsberry

a NEW COLLABORATION WITH PROJECT ECHELON

From June 12th to the 14th, riders, supported veterans, and others from Project Echelon community – a domestic professional cycling team and a non-profit funded to support veterans – conducted Ride for Equality.  Ride for Equality is a campaign that focused on supporting black veterans through raising funds for the National Association of Black Veterans (NABVETS).

Project Echelon is a non-profit with a race team that Eric Hill co-founded after a veteran friend reached out to him following a third suicide attempt in 2015.

“The whole idea of Project Echelon is to bring the civilian community together with the veteran community through sport, and to use sport for self-improvement,” Hill said. “Also, it is an opportunity for the racers on our team to grow as young men and leaders in our community as well as cyclists.”

Last year Project Echelon donated more than $35,000 for veteran support and volunteered more than 2,500 hours, Hill said.

The Ride for Equality idea came from an Army Staff Sergeant and Project Echelon Board Member, Joshua Boguslofski, who is currently stationed at Fort Drum, New York who was getting questions from friends and veterans.

“I was getting asked from others what Project Echelon’s stance was with the Black Lives Matter movement,” said Boguslofski.  “I wanted Project Echelon to show our support for the movement, but I also wanted it to be in a way that kept us as close to our mission as possible (to educate, equip, and empower veterans and their communities through physical activity and self-discovery).”

“He asked if we could do it,” Hill said.  “It took about two days to put together.”

That weekend, Project Echelon riders and some supported veterans rode for 8 hours and 46 minutes on the bike, pedaled 84.6 miles, or ran 8.46 miles to honor the life of George Floyd, who died after a police officer kneeled on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.  One other veteran completed 846 burpees.

Within a week of planning, spreading the word, and executing, Project Echelon raised $2500 for NABVETS.  A collaboration has formed between NABVETS and Project Echelon that will include an annual Ride for Equality to raise funds and highlight NBVETS.

“I am looking forward to having more time to plan and raise awareness for the next one,” said Boguslofski.  I am also excited to see what the future has in store for both NABVETS and Project Echelon through this collaboration.”
